SPECIAL EVENT

YOUNG SCHOLAR'S AWARD

It’s an honor for the host of the 9th International Conference on Social Representations this time to be able to introduce a new event, the Young Scholar’s Award. With the support of the Faculty of Psychology - University of Indonesia, Faculty of Psychology - Gajah Mada University and Rumah Ganeca Research Centre, we provide free tickets for three selected Young Researchers to attend the 9th International Conference on Social Representations in Bali, 30th June – 5th July 2008.

In the beginning, this award was aimed at getting young researchers in Asia to undertake basic research using the Social Representations theory. But considering that this goal can also nurture creative and innovative thinking in other regions such as Europe, South America, Canada, Africa, which would provide challenge to the development of the Social Representations theory itself, we decide to open his competition for any young researchers interested to work using this discipline.

The criteria for young researchers who can participate are as follows:

  • Under 30 years and finishing a master’s/doctorate degree using the Social Representations theory, or has finished a doctorate degree using the Social Representations theory within less than 5 year since this competition is announced.
  • Sending an abstract of his / her research (300 words) and a complete paper (7500 words) in English before March 30th 2008 by email to this address : info@9icsr-indonesia.net or permana@9icsr-indonesia.net
  • The paper has to define the subject of research and its need to apply the Social Representations theory, the methodology that refers to the choice of using this theory, novelty of the analyses compared to existing researches.
  • Participants are suggested to present a specific social issue from their own background / local settings as the subject

The assessment will be based on these considerations:

  • Participant’s ability to describe the issue and view Social Representations theory’s importance as an approach to define it, and also to see how some issues cannot be identified by the Social Representations approach
  • The methodological implication from choosing Social Representations approach
  • Sharpness of analysis and ability to bring out a specific issue from participant’s local area as an issue that can be discussed with studies from other regions through the theory of Social Representations
  • Novelty of thinking at theoretical level, the possibility of its application at empirical level and also the possibility of dialoguing the analysis with other disciplines

A special Scientific Committee consisting of researchers from Indonesia, Europe & South America will select and choose three young scholars to come to Bali. A special session will be designed to allow these three Young Scholar’s to present their works. A panel of Professors and Senior Researchers will lead this session and perform as discussants to show the importance of their studies for Social Representations theory’s future.
